5 Signs Your Hot Tub Pump is About to Fail

The pump is the heart of your hot tub, responsible for circulating water through the filters, heating system, and massage jets. At Hot Tub Southport, the team often finds that many expensive pump replacements could have been avoided if the early warning signs had been spotted sooner.

Identifying these five common indicators can save you hundreds of pounds in repair costs and prevent your spa from being out of action during the peak season.

1. Unusual Noises (Grinding or Squealing)

A healthy pump should have a steady, rhythmic hum. If you hear a high-pitched squealing or a loud grinding noise, it usually indicates that the internal bearings are failing. This is often caused by a small, undetected leak from the shaft seal that has allowed water to enter the motor housing.

2. The “Humming” But No Water Flow

If you turn on your jets and hear the motor humming but see no water movement, the pump’s starting capacitor may have failed, or the impeller could be jammed with debris. If left in this state, the motor will eventually overheat and burn out, leading to a much higher repair bill.

3. Leaking Around the Pump Housing

During your Annual Service (£330), a technician will always check for “weeping” around the pump. If you notice water pooling at the base of the cabinet, it is often a sign that the wet-end seals have perished. Catching this early allows for a simple seal replacement rather than a full motor swap.

4. “Low Flow” or “FLO” Error Codes

Modern digital control panels are designed to protect the heater. If your pump isn’t moving enough water, you will likely see a “FLO” or “DRY” error code. While this can sometimes be a dirty filter, it is often a sign that the pump’s impeller is worn or the motor is losing power.

5. Tripping the Electrics

If your hot tub suddenly trips the RCD (circuit breaker) when the jets are activated, it often points to an internal electrical short within the pump motor. This is a serious safety issue and requires an immediate technical inspection to prevent further damage to the spa’s control board.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

Regular servicing is the best way to monitor the health of your pump. Our Refresh Service  and Annual Technical Service  include a full inspection of the pump’s integrity, ensuring that small issues are fixed before they become total failures.
